Abortion BOSTON (AP) Current church policy which permits abortion comes under scrutiny today during the eighth biennial convention of the Lutheran Church in America. The 685 delegates, meeting at an eight-day convention, sets church policy for the 3.1 million-member denomination in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Church policy adopted in 1970 says "a woman or couple may decide responsibility to seek an abortion" and encourages those considering such adecision to consult with their physicians and spiritual counselors. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod, a regional governing body, asked that the policy be reviewed. A committee considering all resolutions put before the convention has recommended that the Pennsylvania resolution be voted down.

Study Criticizes Israeli Schools NEW YORK (AP) Pupils in Israel's nigh schools get a "skimpy and unbalanced view" of the history and accomplishments of American Jews, a new study finds. It says the gap is due primarily to inadequate material in history texts used in Israel. The two-year, study was financed by the American Jewish Committee's Jacob Blausten: Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights and conducted by Reuven Surkis, director of Israel's historical society. The study, based on examination of Israeli textbooks and interviews with 212 Israeli teachers, found that the poor information Israeli pupils have about U.S. Jews adversely affects understanding of the U.S.

and Canadian governments to work toward a just solution to the Lebanese civil war. The amnesty resolution and various proposed amendments were debated for more than an hour by the convention delegates. The convention voted 330-261 to add the word "unconditional" to the call for amnesty for draft evaders. Later, the convention added a plea to President Ford to pardon those who already had been convicted for their resistence to the war. The Rev.

Hans L. Wagner of San Diego reminded the convention that he, a native of Germany, and thousands of others had once emigrated to avoid fighting in what they considered unjust wars. "We are in effect the descendants of draft dodgers," he said. Fred T. Marshall of the Illinois Synod spoke in opposition to adding the word "unconditional," saying, "Those who choose to be conscientious objectors take upon them the responsibility to pay the penalty."
