It is the fifth largest post in the state. In 1966 it ranked 27th in the nation in membership. The post at first held its meetings in the National Guard Armory located then on Chester Street. In April of 1946, the post purchased the property at 160 Poplar an old Colonial Home which was built in 1883 by the late John A. Greer.

The formal opening of the VFW Home was held Dec. 7, 1946, the 4th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Operation continued at this location until May 31, 1961. The pst purchased approximately 60 acres of land on Highway 45 N. in 1961.

In January 1964, Post 1848 pruchased approximately nine acres adjacent to this property with a club house and dwelling already located on it. After extensive remodeling, the Post reopened its club facilities September 1964. Post 1848 has played an important part in the community by undertaking many commu-nuty service projects. By reason of the role it has played in the community with top leadership it has maintained a high place of leadership in the community. Some of the highlights of its community service is noted.

The first VFW citizen award was made in 1949 to the late A. S. Lindv. a Jackdon mer-enchant. VFW state convention was held in Jackson June 18 through June 21 in 1949.

There were over 3.000 delegates and their wives in Jackson for this event. Each Christmas a big Mag Ml MM REMEMBERS our and all others who have apart in winning the war in Vietnam. May the forces of evil be conquered, may right prevail and may a just and lasting peace be ours to enjoy again.
