The original Monitor, built by Swedish-born inventor John Er-icson at the Greenpoint Navy Yard, Brooklyn, N.Y., in the first two months of 1862, was not Friday night at a mass rally at Mason Temple, the church were Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his last public speech. The SCLC says it holds its annual conventions in the city where it was most deeply involved during the preceding year. It was in Memphis that King was killed by an assassin's bullet.

He had come here to help the city's striking garbage collectors, 98 per cent of them Negro. James Earl Ray, the man charged with murder in the slaying, is now housed in the Shelby County jail, about two miles from the Lorraine Motel, the scene of the assassination. Memphis was the springboard for the SCLC's jump from purely civil rights activities to work in the economic field. King and other SCLC officials had been making plans for the Resurrection City campaign in Washington just before King was shot. The Rev.

Ralph Abernathy, the man who took over at King's death, is expected to be reelected SCLC president. "Dr. Abernathy is the only man that can handle the job," Hosea Williams, a top SCLC aide, said Sunday. "I think SCLC would die without him." Abernathy is to deliver the convention's keynote address Friday night from the podium at Mason Temple. It was there King spoke publicly for the last time, the night of April 3.

About 21 hours later he was killed. Dissension over the garbage strike, a riot that broke out when King attempted to lead a march here March 28, Kings death and resulting outbreaks of violence have produced ill feeling between whites and Ne groes here. Police have promised protection for SCLC leaders, and the SCLC, in turn, has promised to deal quickly and forcefully with any disruptions among its members. Mayors Carl Stokes of Cleveland and Richard Hatcher of Gary, the only Negro mayors of major American cities, have advised SCLC officials they expect to be present.

Hatcher is scheduled to speak Dr. Boone Resigns From Church Pos! Dr. W. C. Boone, pastor of the Woodland Baptist Church, Sunday announced his resignation to the congregation.

He had been pastor of one of the city's newest Baptist churches since its organization in January 1965 until illness forced him to leave the pulpit in mid-March of this year. While his health is greatly improved, Dr. Boone said he would not resume the duties of a full-time pastor. A native of Kentucky, Dr. Boone was reared in Memphis and come to Jackson from the presidency of Oklahoma Baptist University in 1932 to assume the duties of pastor of the First Baptist Church.

He served in that position until 1940, when he moved to Louisville, to serve as pastor of the Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Following this he served as executive secretary of the Kentucky Baptist Convention for 16 years. Reaching the age of automatic retirement in that position, he returned to Jackson to make his home. Upon his return, Dr. Boone served as supply preacher and interim pastor for several area churches and was executive director for three years of the Jackson-Madison County United Fund.

The Woodland Baptist Church was organized "not as a mission," but as an independent Baptist "Fellowship" to meet the needs of a church of that denomination in the new and fast growing area of Northwest Jackson. The church has enjoyed steady growth and now has more than 200 members, and is located on Wallace Road and Shady Lane. In accepting his resignation the church voted to make Dr. Boone their "pastor emeritus." Dr. and Mrs.

Boone will con tinue to hold membership in the civ ch. He is a past president and member of the Jackson Rotary Club. Dr. and Mrs. Boone make their home at 307 Morningside Dr.
