APOSTOLIC UNITED PENTECOSTAL CHURCH 532 South Royal H. T. Greer, Pastor Vai CHURCH OF CHRIST trying to find out how to get high school students to listen to the greatest message in the world the message of Jesus Christ." Young Life is supported completely by contributions from concerned adults and local organizations, and some churches have included the group in their missions budgets, the director said. Nearly half this year's $24,000 budget already has been raised or pledged, Brad mentioned. But the remaining amount always has to come from local supporters.

Though the funds are sent to the organization's headquarters in Colorado Springs, Baker's salary and all other operating expenses are drawn exclusively from that account. If the community ever fails to support the local Young Life work, national leadership officials usually transfer the staff person to an area that is more receptive, Brad explained. Nearly 150 students are now involved in the two Jackson clubs, and about 80 are involved with the recently-formed Martin group. Baker is optimistic that a club can be started at South Side High School here if volunteer workers can be located. Kellee Scott, 16, a J-M High student, has been attending her school's club since November because "you really have a lot of fun and get to know more students.

I wouldn't dare miss one because they're too much fun." The clubs meet in a different home each week and close with a low-key 10-minute talk by the club leader on Christian faith. By JOE WESTBURY Sun Reporter At 7 p.m. the house looks like any other house on the block. Two cars in the driveway, kitchen and den lights on, and music coming from the home's stereo system attest that the family is home for the night. But, one by one, cars driven by Jackson teenagers gather on the spot and by 7:30 p.m.

automobiles fill the driveway and line the street. It's Thursday night, and Young Life clubs are meeting for an informal hour of enjoyment and to "do some crazy skits and activities," explained Brad Baker, Young Life area director. Clad mostly in blue jeans, the high school students quickly find a comfortable place on the floor and begin discussing the day's activities an English exam, homework yet to be done, the coming weekend. Before long, under Baker's direction, the teenagers are singing songs ranging from "Rocky Mountain High" to "Have You Seen Jesus My Lord?" One of the students usually accompanies the group on a guitar. The clubs, which have no dues or membership rosters, have been active in Jackson for the last five years and Baker added the clubs have experienced substantial growth the last two years.

The director, who came to Jackson as this area's first and only salaried Young Life staff member, has seen the clubs grow from one group nearly two years ago to three. Brad is in charge of the Jackson Central-Merry club, and is assisted by the volunteer help of Page Little. Quoting founder Rayburn, Baker defined Young Life's purpose as "a group of people who are reach young people with the message of Christ who didn't attend church worship services though they were on church rolls," Brad explained. "There are.

now about 3,000 clubs in the United States, with more than 100,000 young people involved on a weekly basis." The director, who spends several hours each week attending local high school activities and "hanging out with the kids," feels the clubs have been successful because the students discover Young Life for themselves and attendance is voluntary. Evening Worship P.M. Wed. Bible Study 7:00 P.M. CALVARY By GEORGE W. CORNELL NEW YORK (AP) Sometimes religious books far outsell the widely touted, so-called "best sellers," but never show up on the lists because of practices in the trade.

But a current religious number has hit such a peak that it has broken into nearly all the front-runner listings. It's "Angels: God's Secret Agents," by evangelist Billy Graham, with 1,210,000 copies distributed since it came out last fall. "It's the fastest selling book we've ever had, and to the best of our knowledge, that anybody's ever had," says Alex Liepa, an editor of Doubleday company. Nevertheless, it's one of the few religious books to push into the major "best-selling" lists, even though such books often beat those listed in national sales and popularity among American readers, and though sales of religious books lately have climbed faster than other categories. Jennifer Bryon, of Nashville, a Baptist Book Stores communications specialist who has made an extensive study of the situation says: "The fact that books designed for a specific market-may not get on a best-seller list even though they sell as many copies as those that do gives the public a wrong picture of what books are really selling." One reason mentioned for the disparity is that compilers of the lists generally don't check with religious books stores, of which there are more than 3,500 in the country.

Other factors also apparently figure in the problem, including a tendancy not to consider religious books in the general nonfiction category. "To say the best-seller lists are inaccurate is to put it mildly," says Liepa, citing various religious books that don't make the lists while selling far more in number than secular books which do.
