deaths 1 4 The Jackson Sun, Jackson, Tennessee, Thursday, August 15, 1974 threw banana peels on the front steps. At this point five national guardsmen who usually protect the embassy called in reinforcements but they did not try to break up the protest. The embassy spokesman said no one inside the embassy was injured in the rock throwing spree. He said some of the rocks went through the windows of the office of Ambassador William Jorden. United Brands suspended its Panamanian operations July 24 in protest over the $1 tax per 40-pound crate of bananas.

Bananas Thrown In Protest formal protest would be filed with the Panamanian government because of the demonstration Wednesday. An estimated 300 'high school students gathered in front of the embassy and for 45 minutes protested peacefully. But as most of the students began to leave, some of the group tried to haul down the American flag in front of the building. Failing to do the students sang the Panamanian national anthem, burned a crude reproduction of the U.S.' flag and PANAMA (AP) Panamanian students stoned the United States Embassy here, smashing 80 windows as Panamanian national guard troops stood nearby directing traffic around the demonstrators. Officials said the protest, which included banana peels thrown on the embassy's front steps, was against the refusal of an American banana company, United Brands, to pay the export tax levied by Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras.
