THE game and has a knack for finding the football." Milan led all area defenders in total tackles last season as a junior. With the 5-foot-9, 225-pounder who also doubles as a fullback leading the team on both sides of the ball, Trenton is 2-0 heading into Friday night's Region 7 2-A matchup with McKenzie. "We potentially have the best football talent of any team from (Class) A to 2-A," Milan said. "We're just a hard-headed group that loves to go out and play." Potential is the key word Haney used to describe Milan following last season's performance, when he dubbed him as "potentially the best linebacker I've seen in nine years at Pea-body." Milan was the catalyst for the Tide defense in 1992, totaling 96 solo tackles, 46 assists and two interceptions while earning all-district and All-West Tennessee awards. Milan said he feels no added stress from that label and has even used it as a motivator.

"It's not any added pressure. He's just depending on me to lead the others with my play," he said. "That's a compliment to me for how hard I work." Milan actually laid the foundation for his last two stellar seasons as a sophomore on the Tide's 1991 team that finished as state runner-up in Class A. On that senior-dominated team, Milan started at offensive tackle and regularly played at linebacker alongside Skip Joyce, who is now starting at Ole Miss. Because he was one of the team's younger players, he was brought along slow and able to observe the techniques of players like Joyce.

"With all of the leadership we had on that team, I was able to just lay back and play ball," Milan said. "Skip really helped me a lot and when he left it hurt." But Joyce wasn't the only former Trenton player to have Pass Tot Pf 135 596 44 162 502 27 142 500 19 87 454 20 130 411 14 12 402 30 34 365 14 110 268 6 137 239 7 Tide Campbell f''. y'W CLASS 5A Passing R.Baskins, Mun 4 B.Davis, JCM 2 A. (He was named after his father, James Sr. when his parents were expecting a girl and didn't have a male name ready when he was born). Since he was a child, Milan has looked up to former Tide standout and current UCLA linebacker Kim Lawhorn.

About twice a month, Milan gets football tips and gives progress reports to Lawhorn via phone conversations from Los Angeles. Since opposing teams have often opted to run away from him and blowout scores have kept him on the sideline, Milan has had a slightly greater impact while playing on offense this season. On 16 carries through two games, the fullback has gained 171 yards (10.86 yards per carry) and is the team's leading rusher. Defensively, he has recorded eight solo tackles. "Probably the number of plays that have come his way," Haney said.

"People know what I can do, but they don't know about the rest of our team," Milan said. "If they try to put everybody on me to keep me away from the ball, that just frees up one of my teammates."
