SPRING FUNG Area tennis players eliminated Baseball Tennis TEAM RESULTS Division li Boys Semifini iinals In Class AAA boys' doubles, Jackson Central-Merry's Bo Hardegree and Sean DeWitt lost to Science Hill's Bryan Breese and Ryan Reynolds, 7-6 (3), 6-1. "We played bad," DeWitt said. "It was not one of our better days. They were good, though. You've got to give them credit.

DeWitt and Hardegree both will attend the University of Tennessee in the fall, but Hardegree will be in Knoxville a little bit earlier. Til be up there in a month," said Hardegree, who signed a football scholarship with the Vols. "I'm already on the workouts and ready to go." Jeremy Peppas, 425-9635 By JEREMY PEPPAS jpeppasjacksonsun.com MEMPHIS It was one and done for West Tennessee tennis at Spring Fling in Memphis on Wednesday. University School of Jackson's Namrata Patel lost in straight sets to Gracie Glassmeyer of Donelson Christian Academy in Class A-AA singles. This was the second consecutive day that Patel, just a sophomore, faced Glassmeyer.

In the Class A-AA team title match on Tuesday, Glassmeyer won, 6-0, 6-2. "She's a variety player, and I have trouble with those kind of tennis for the past four years, as has Meyers. "The other team played pretty well" Meyers said. 1 didn't think we played our best tennis. You get up here, it's stout competition." In Class A-AA girls' doubles, the USJ duo of Katie Emery and Meg Gore lost to Kara Cook and Megan DeSha of Chattanooga Christian, 6-2, 6-1.

"They were really good," said Emery, a recent USJ graduate. "They were all over the net" "They had great strategies," Gore said. "They were changing things up." And in an echo of her teammate, "they were great net players." players," Patel said. "She also knew what to do at the right times." In one of the more entertaining matches of the day, Will Cotton and Justin Peach of Friendship Christian defeated Micah Meyers and Shuntarra Tsukiyama of Crockett County, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2 in Class A-AA doubles. Meyers and Tsukiyama, both juniors, have plans for next season.

"We'll work really hard this summer and fallwinter," said Tsukiyama, a foreign exchange student from Yokohama, Japan. "Micah is a good tennis player and we moved pretty well together." Ezell-Harding struck late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and the hopes of the Tomcats. The game-winning shot came from an Eagle forward from about 17 yards out, the shot was punched away by Tomcat goalkeeper David Black. Unfortunately, the punched ball hit the post and ricocheted back into the net.

"I really didn't have that much time to react," Black said about the game-winning shot. "It started to go right of me and after that it was just behind me. I don't know what happened." With the Tomcats facing elimination after the Ezell goal, the team looked to Monday's sectional heroes Freddy Tims and John Michael Emerson. But the prolific goal-scoring duo could not answer the call for a goal. "They are one of the better teams in the state, so we knew they would be good," Black said.

"We knew we would have to bring our best game, we did play hard, just not as hard as we could have." Tims had the two best looks to even the score late in the game. The first chance came on a Tims header from a crossing pass. However, the shot bounced off the post. The second chance came when Tims was dribbling in the box and looking for a shot when he was knocked down. "Honestly, I thought Tims was fouled in the box," Haywood coach Steve Svenbakken.

"I had a Eagles Continued from cover "This win builds some confidence going into the next game," Smith said. "It took awhile to get our bats going today, but once we did, it started rolling." Indeed, it did. For four innings, JCS managed only one hit off Unaka left-hander Randy Swearingen (10-2). Their only two runs had come off three consecutive walks, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Lee Mauney in the fourth. But the fifth inning was all JCS.

With two outs, the Eagles scored seven runs on four hits and four Unaka errors. Chris Harris had an RBI double to right-center, and Gary Cadigan's RBI single to right tied it 44. A walk and hit batsman loaded the bases for senior catcher Dal Cop-lin, who was frustrated after striking out twice. "I was just looking for a fastball down the middle, and I got it" Coplin said. He stroked the pitch on a line drive into centerfield, where the MBA 4, Baylor 0 Championship MBA 4, MUS 3 Girls Semifinals St Agnes 4, Baylor 0 Knox.

Haywood jumped out in front of the eighth-ranked Eagles early, when Luis Rosales scored just seven minutes into the game. However, that was the only offense the Tomcats could muster all day.

A surprising fact considering Haywood had not been held to just one goal all year. "We just got out of sync late in the first half and they took control," Svenbakken said. "We tried to come out of halftime looking to attack more and getting back to fundamentals, but it never happened." Svenbakken said that Ezell's midfield and goalkeeper were extremely sharp, but it was their possession game that really hurt the Tomcats. "We played hard, and our players played well, but their possession game was to hard for us to adjust to," Svenbakken said. Haywood ends an 18-5-1 season.

He was put in a very difficult situation with the bases loaded and only one out We basically asked him to not let them score anymore, and he didn't. To see a hard worker like him succeed really makes you proud." JCS only had five hits, but four came in the decisive fifth inning. Carter was certain his Eagles would finally get to Unaka's left-hander. "We knew if we could put a couple of hits together and put pressure on Unaka, we could score some runs," Carter said.
