Jackson Sun Friday, July 7, 2006 Bush marks birthday with calls, surprises and a spilled secret By TERENCE HUNT The Associated Press WASHINGTON After months of griping about getting old, President Bush turned 60 Thursday and decided it wasn't so bad after all. "Let me just say this: It's a lot younger than you think," the birthday boy said with a rueful smile. There were surprises, a spilled secret, a song and congratulatory calls from afar. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin both wished Bush happy birthday in separate telephone conversations that focused on a lesscheerful subject: North Korea's missile tests this week. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, visiting the White House, also brought birthday greetings and a surprise gift.

But Bush found out about it during a joint press conference in the East Room. A Canadian reporter blew the secret. "Before I ask you a question, I'm just curious, what do you think of that belt buckle the prime minister gave you as a birthday gift, and are you wearing it?" the reporter asked Bush "I hadn't seen it yet," the president replied, laughing. "You gave it away." The reporter continued on with another question but Bush kept talking about the present. "Anyway, thanks for the belt buckle in advance," Bush told Harper.

"No problem at all," the prime minister responded. "Looking forward to getting it," Bush said. "I figure, if you're going to be 60, you should get something," Harper said. "That's right," Bush said. "Just hope the belt fits." There was a surprise ending to the press conference when a reporter noted to Bush that it was his birthday, too.

Bush invited the reporter, 54-year-old Raghubir Goyal of the India Globe and Asia Today, onto the stage for a birthday picture. "Anybody else have their birthday today?" Bush called out. Richard Benedetto of USA Today, turning 65, stood up and was summoned to the stage. "Amazing, everybody's birthday Eric Harris Dylan Klebold COLUMBINE HIGH Associated Press This combination of file photos released by Columbine High school shows 1998 yearbook photos of students Eric Harris, left, and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives in what remains the deadliest school attack in U.S. history.

Hundreds of pages of hate-filled diary entries, maps and documents released Thursday offer: a chilling insight into the minds of the killers in the days and months before the massacre. Journals of Columbine killers released By ROBERT WELLER The Associated Press GOLDEN, Colo. Authorities released nearly 1,000 pages of new documents from the Columbine High School massacre Thursday, including step-by-step plans written by the two killers as they gleefully plotted the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. "Hell on Earth ahh, my favorite," Dylan Klebold writes in the 1998 yearbook of Eric Harris above a drawing of a gun-wielding headless soldier.

"So many people need to die." The documents released by the Jefferson County sheriff include essays, school work and computer files from Harris and Klebold, the two suicidal killers. The papers also included a journal kept by Harris' father that refers to his son's disciplinary and psychological problems but sheds no light on whether he knew the teen might be capable of the slaughter that left 13 people dead. A scrawled entry in Klebold's day planner apparently sketches out April 20, 1999, down to the minute, starting with a 6 a.m. meeting, a 10:30 a.m. "set up." an 11:12 a.m.

"gear up" and at 11:16 a.m., "HAHAHA." "Have fun!" Klebold writes in another notebook. More than 20,000 documents and videos have been released since the attack, and some of the details released Thursday had been previously disclosed: Some documents include blacked-out portions, including song lyrics, names and computer logons. Sheriff Ted Mink also refused to release videotapes made by the gunmen, concerned they would encourage copycat attacks. But the new material offered chilling details about the killers' activities in the months before the attack. They had "to do" lists, with each purchase of gasoline or a weapon marked off, and they had a hit list with at least 42 entries, all of them blacked out.

The pages are filled with profanity, racial slurs and drawings depicting violence or death. Much of the Klebold material is handwritten, with detailed drawings of guns, sketches of what appears to be the Columbine cafeteria and his hopes for dead. The material also includes a journal kept by Harris' father, Wayne Harris, with entries addressing threats made by his son against classmate Brooks Brown more than a year before the attack. The Brown family reported the threats in early 1998 and still contends the authorities or the Harrises should have taken action against the boy. Wayne Harris writes in his journal about "idle threats of physical harm, property damage, overreaction to minor incidents," although the context of the notes is not clear.

His attorney did not return a call seeking comment. Brooks' father, Randy Brown, said the sheriff's office should release everything, including the videos and audiotapes from the killers. "There are lessons to be learned," he said. "This information will be hidden forever. They are trading their cover-up for the lives of children in other schools." Ralph Ginzburg dies at 76 By LARRY McSHANE The Associated Press NEW YORK Ralph Ginzburg, a magazine publisher who was at the center of two First Amendment battles in the 1960s, tangling with Barry Goldwater and serving eight months in federal prison for obscenity, died Thursday.

He was 76. Ginzburg, who launched a later career as a photographer, died in a Bronx hospice after battling multiple myeloma for three years, said his wife of 49 years, Shoshanna, who collaborated with her husband today," Bush exclaimed. Harper piped up, "I was going to say, if there starts to get any more, I'm going to start to question it." But there was another celebrant, State Department employee Todd Mizis, who was in the audience. "My goodness," Bush said. "Today's your birthday? Awesome." There was time then for a song: a chorus of "Happy Birthday." The big celebration of Bush's birthday was on Tuesday when dozens of his friends gathered at the White House.

In recent months, Bush, in speech after speech, has referred to himself as the "old president, getting older by the minute," as one of "the gray-haired folks," as "getting older" and as just flat-out "old." "For many boomers, turning 60 is a fairly significant said Karl Pillemer, a professor of human development at Cornell University. "The generation that believed it would be young forever, clearly will not. The boomers are having a hard time with the existential reality of life not being one open-ended opportunity after another." President Bush waves Thursday House in Washington. Bush as wellwishers sing 'Happy celebrated his 60th birthday Obituaries MANUEL BALCE Associated Birthday' as he leaves the Thursday. Ginzburg's Avant Garde, first published in 1968, was a literary and art magazine that boasted fans like John Lennon and Pablo Picasso. When that magazine folded, he came up with Moneysworth, a consumer financial newsletter. But it was two other publications, an erotic art quarterly called Eros and the magazine Fact, which called Goldwater's psychological background into question, that placed Ginzburg in the courts for years. Besides his wife, Ginzburg is survived by three children.
